How to Size a LiFePO4 Inverter : A Complete Guide

Introduction: Why Correct Inverter Sizing Matters

Choosing the right inverter size is one of the most important steps in setting up a reliable power backup or solar system. An undersized inverter will overload and trip frequently, while an oversized inverter will cost more and waste energy.

LiFePO4 outperforms lead acid in every way. When working with LiFePO4 (Lithium Ferro Phosphate) inverters, correct sizing is even more critical because these systems are designed for long lifespans and high efficiency. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to size a LiFePO4 inverter for both home and business use, with practical steps and examples.

Step 1: Identify Your Load Requirements

Start by listing all the appliances or equipment you want to run on the inverter.

  • For homes, this could include fans, lights, refrigerators, TVs, computers, and air conditioners.
  • For businesses, include machinery, computers, servers, lighting, and cooling systems.

👉 Make a table with each appliance, its power rating (Watts), and how many units will run at the same time.

Formula:
Total Load (W) = Sum of (Appliance Power × Quantity)

Example (Home):

  • 6 LED lights (10W each) = 60W
  • 3 ceiling fans (70W each) = 210W
  • 1 refrigerator (200W) = 200W
  • 1 TV (120W) = 120W
    Total Load = 590W

Step 2: Add a Safety Margin

Inverters should not be run at 100% capacity all the time. Add a 25–30% safety margin to your total load.

Example:
590W × 1.3 = 767W

👉 So, you should size your inverter for at least 800W for this home setup.

Step 3: Convert Watts to kVA (Inverter Rating)

Inverters are usually rated in kVA (kilo-volt-ampere), not watts. To convert:

Formula:
kVA = Total Watts ÷ Power Factor

  • Power factor is usually 0.8 for homes and businesses.

Example:
800W ÷ 0.8 = 1 kVA inverter minimum required.

Step 4: Decide Backup Duration

Next, calculate how long you want your inverter to run during a power outage. This determines your battery capacity.

  • Homes: 3–5 hours backup is common.
  • Businesses: 6–8 hours or more may be needed.

Step 5: Calculate Battery Bank Size

  • Formula (for LiFePO₄):
Battery Capacity (Ah) = (Load in Watts × Backup Hours) ÷ (Battery Voltage × Depth of Discharge × Efficiency)

    • LiFePO₄ batteries allow up to 80-90% Depth of Discharge (DoD) (vs 50% for lead-acid).
    • Efficiency ~95%.

Example (Home, 800W load, 4 hours backup, 48V system):
    = (800 × 4) ÷ (48 × 0.8 × 0.95)
    = 3200 ÷ 36.48
    = ~88 Ah battery bank at 48V.

So, you’ll need a 48V 100Ah LiFePO₄ battery for this setup.

Step 6: Factor in Solar Integration (Optional)

Integrating solar ensures substantial power savings. If you’re combining solar with your LiFePO₄ inverter:

  • Match solar panel capacity with daily load consumption.
  • Example: If your daily load = 5 kWh, install ~2 kW solar panels (depending on sunlight hours).

👉 Rule of thumb:
1 kW solar panel = 4-5 units/day in Indian conditions.

Step 7: Business Sizing Example

  • For a small office with:

    • 10 computers (150W each) = 1500W
    • 10 lights (20W each) = 200W
    • 5 fans (70W each) = 350W
    • 1 server (500W) = 500W
      Total = 2550W
    • 30% safety margin = 3315W
      Convert to kVA: 3315 ÷ 0.8 = 4.1 kVA inverter

Backup = 6 hours → Battery bank required:
    (3315 × 6) ÷ (96V × 0.8 × 0.95) = 19,890 ÷ 72.96 = 272 Ah at 96V
= Four 96V 70Ah LiFePO₄ modules (modular design).

For societies and businesses, some still consider DG sets. See why LiFePO₄ beats diesel generators.

Mistakes to Avoid in LiFePO₄ Inverter Sizing

  1. Ignoring surge power: Appliances like fridges and ACs need 2–3× surge power.
  2. Overloading the inverter: Running too close to 100% capacity reduces lifespan.
  3. Wrong battery voltage: Match inverter rating (12V, 24V, 48V, 96V) to your load.
  4. Undersized battery bank: Leads to short backup times.
  5. Overestimating solar generation: Always check local sunlight hours.
Once sized correctly, proper care is vital. Here’s how to maintain your LiFePO₄ inverter

Conclusion

Correct sizing of a LiFePO₄ inverter ensures reliable backup, longer battery life, and cost savings. Start with your load calculation, add a margin, choose the right inverter capacity in kVA, and then size your LiFePO₄ battery bank based on backup hours.

Bought a 5 KVA SVS (operating voltage 150v to 300v) after discussing and co-ordinating with Mr. Manan for several weeks. In all this time, he was so helpful and patiently answered all my queries.

The packing was top-notch, wrapped up with bubble sheets, foams and packed with wooden reapers.
When I turned on the stabilizer for the first time, everything was working fine until main voltage drops to 205. I messaged Manan about this and sent a video that stabilizer cutoff if the voltage drops below 205 and when I messaged him it was already 10 PM, but he immediately called me and apologized and assured of looking into the matter. Next day upon diagnosis it was found that a component got damaged during transit. They sent all the suspected components and parts via air immediately and also assigned their technician to visit my place and do the repair work. The technician was very skillful and knowledgeable about his job.

There is a lot of voltage fluctuation in my area and sometime voltage even drops to 130v and for the past two months the system is running with zero issues and is protecting my equipments very effectively.

NKB Technocrats' product quality, dedication and service support is excellent. Highly recommended!

I bought a 45 KVA static stabilizer and a LiPO4 inverter from NKB Technocrats and I believe these two were/are one of the best decisions I ever made.

Just to give you some context, I have a recently constructed my property, and though we don’t have drastic fluctuations in the place that we live in, I have had instances where a lot of my expensive equipment got fried thanks to the electricity department. My initial decision was to purchase a servo stabilizer system but after learning more about static stabilizers, I am happy I went with it.

I have space constraints and a static stabilizer is light years ahead when it comes to space saving. On the technical front, it has so far handled 209 to 230 and 257 to 230 voltage correction. All my ACs are inverter PCB based besides other office equipment so I did not want to risk not having a stabilizer.

Now on the inverter side, I was looking at Exide, Luminous primarily with the usual setup, and then I began reading about Lithium Iron Phosphate based systems. I did make a calculated bet on it, but I must say I am blown away by the efficiency of this inverter system.

I am from the IT field and everyone told me that I “may” need a dedicated UPS for my server rack (tiny server rack at my home) as inverters usually are not meant to handle tiny blips in computers and servers when lights go on an off. Once the inverter and stabilizer systems went live, the inverter has been tested on multiple power cuts, and it just doesn’t fail. I have been on critical meetings, but no blip, no internet losses, my server systems and video calls just keep going. It is way smaller than an equivalent Exide / Luminous traditional setup. I haven’t stress tested it yet, so don’t think of this as a detailed review - but now I don’t need yet another UPS for my machines which is a BIG plus for me.

After Sales:
Mr. Manan supported us on every step of the way during installation. The packaging was perfect, no dents, damages or issues in transport. My electrical contractors went on multiple calls with him just to double check, triple check wiring. My electricians could not believe a 45KVA system could be so small, as they are used to servo systems. Funny side story - they clicked pictures of the system after installation. 🙂

It has been about 2 months since the installation, and the systems are going strong. I have spoken with Mr. Manan multiple times post installation on questions I had as a lay person in this domain and he has patiently helped respond to these as well.

Overall Experience:
The entire experience was smooth, with Mr. Manan patiently answering all my questions, concerns and technically guiding me in things which weren’t necessarily related to the stabilizer. I had multiple quotations from different vendors including those in my city, but I finally went with NKB Technocrats based on the following factors:
- Technically very sound, many of the other vendors were unable to answer what I thought were basic questions
- Very patient in answering questions, they are not just out to make a sale
- They don't push you around and listen to the actual problem you are facing and then give solutions
- The electronic chipsets used (I had specific questions about what chipset was being used - in all honesty I did not know about this but my architect had guided me what to look out for)

So, yes, while NKB Technocrats is one of the more expensive systems, and I did take a leap of faith going with them vs vendors who were in my city or a lot closer to my city, so far I have no problems. After building a brand new property I did not want to take any chances and these guys have supported me all the way.

I would gladly recommend them if you are dealing with sensitive equipment and want to increase the overall power condition at your home/office.

And thanks Manan and team for making such high end systems!
